Chapter 1: A new Beginning
Professor Juniper had decided that today was the day that my two best friends, Cheren, Bianca and I get our very first Pokemon. Waiting in my room with Cheren for Bianca, the professor had walked up the stairs into the bedroom carrying a fairly large gift box. Without a word, she gently placed it on the table and left.
“Where’s Bianca? She’s late.” Cheren complained. I stood beside him silently staring at the gorgeously wrapped box with excitement. Just then we heard footsteps coming up the stairs.
“I’m here!” Her voice sounding very cheerful. Cheren whipped around to her.
“I know you are always late but…. Seriously…?” Cheren scorned her. “Today is a very important day! Professor Juniper wants to give us our first Pokemon!”
“Well, I’m here now.” Bianca walked to the other side of me staring at the box as well. “Since it was delivered to Alyla’s house, she gets first pick.”
Cheren turned around while saying “Naturally.” Looking over at me, “Well hurry up and open the box! I’m excited to meet our Pokemon!”
Taking two steps to the table, I picked up the note that laid on the lid of the box.
I’ve brought three Pokemon, one for you and one for each of your friends. Please settle your choices politely. Enjoy your Pokemon!
--Professor Juniper.
After reading it out loud, I set the note to the side and undid the ribbon before flipping the lid open. Inside the box were three Poke balls sitting on a red cushion. Randomly picking one, I took the one on the far right which had Oshawott. Then Bianca stepped up to me and grabbed one that had Tepig leaving Cheren with the last one obtaining Snivy.
“Everyone has chosen a Pokemon! …. So that’s that! Hey I know! Let’s have a Pokemon battle!” Bianca suggested.
Cheren made an uneasy face. “Honestly, Bianca… Even though they’re still weak Pokemon, you shouldn’t have Pokemon battles inside a house.”
Bianca gave him a light glare. “Don’t be a worrywart! These little ones are weak, like you said. We have to let them battle so they’ll get stronger. It’s settled, Alyla! Get ready for a Pokemon battle!”
Right away, we went into battle mode. Sending both Oshawott and Tepig out, I called out a move Oshawott knew. “Oshawott, tackle!” But it only caused a little damage. Tepig also used tackle causing the same amount of damage.
“Tackle again!” I called out. Oshawott and Tepig kept using tackle back and forth until one of them couldn’t move anymore. That happened to be Tepig. Winning the battle, Oshawott earned some experience and I earned myself 500 poke coins. By the time the battle was over with, the bedroom was a complete mess!
“Wow… Alyla, you’re gonna be an awesome trainer someday, I can tell! No doubt!” Bianca exclaimed.
“Uh… Bianca, would you take a look around?” Cheren asked in a worried tone. Bianca did as Cheren asked.
“Wh-Whoa! What happened!? Wow! Pokemon are amaaaaazing!! So little, but so strong! I’m so glad that I get to have a Pokemon! …Oh. Um, sorry about your room, Alyla.”
Cheren steps between us facing Bianca. “You…are completely hopeless. Here! I’ll restore your Pokemon for you.”
Using a potion on her Tepig to heal it up, he then turned to me. “Your Pokemon needs to be fixed up, too.” He used another potion on my Oshawott.
“Hey, Cheren! How about you battle, too? With all you know, I’m sure you can battle without turning the room into a disaster area like I did!”
“I believe you’re right! It’ll be no problem for me to keep the room from getting any messier. Besides, it’s not fair if you two are the only ones who get to have fun battling!” Taking two steps back, “It’s decided. You’ll be my opponent… in our first Pokemon battle! Let’s see what you can do, Snivy!”
In this battle, instead of Tepig being our opponent, it’s now Snivy, the grass Pokemon. Seeing how Tail Whip doesn’t do any damage at all, Tackle was the only move we could use.
“All right, Oshawott, let’s use Tackle once again!” Just like the other battle, the two of them kept using Tackle with the occasion of Snivy using Leer to lower our defense. But in the end, Oshawott and I were the victors. Oshawott earning more experience and me earns another 500 Poke coins.
“I made a strange blunder in my first battle, but this feeling I have… I’m finally a trainer. But first, we’d better go apologize to your mother about this messed-up room.”
“Oh! I’d better come, too!” Then with that, both Cheren and Bianca hurried down the stairs with me a bit slower.
“I’m very sorry about all the trouble, ma’am.” Cheren apologized before Bianca spoke up “Well, um… We can clean up…”
“Cleaning up? No worries. I’ll take care of it later.” My mother stated. “Shouldn’t you be on your way to meet Professor Juniper?”
“Yes, thank you! Please excuse us.” Cheren spoke. “Come on. Let’s go thank Professor Juniper.” Walking towards the door, Cheren stopped and looked over his shoulder. “I’ll be waiting in front of the Pokemon Research Lab.”
“Oh! Wait! I’ve gotta go home first. Thanks for having us over!”
Then with that, they both left the house. Mom strolled up to me. “My, my, Alyla. Pokemon battles are so lively, aren’t they? I could hear the Pokemon’s cries clear down here! Hm. That sure reminded me of my first Pokemon battle! Oh, and you know? After a battle, you need to rest your Pokemon!”
Then she rested my Oshawott. “Now your Pokemon is looking great! Now, if you’re going out, don’t forget your cross-transceiver!” She handed me the device so I could place it in one of the pockets of my bag.
“You’re going to thank the professor too, right? Better get going, honey!” I nodded with a smile.
“Bye mom! See ya later!” I hurried out the front door. Closing the door, I noticed Bianca walking down the dirt path to her house. Following her, I entered the house to see her father yelling at her.
“No, no, a thousand times no!”
“But, I’m… I’m a good trainer who got a Pokemon and everything! I can totally go on an adventure!” She started walking towards the door when she noticed me standing there. “Oh.. It’s okay… It’s fine! I’ll be waiting for you in front of the lab, okay?”
She walked around me and exited the door leaving me standing there in the house. Sighing a little, I also exited the door into the fresh air. Going back up the path to Professor Juniper’s Lab, my heart was starting to beat faster and faster.
So this is it. I finally get to go on an adventure with my very own pokemon. Can’t wait to see what happens.
Reaching the outside of the lab, Bianca and Cheren stood there waiting for me.
“Ok! Let’s go meet the professor.” Cheren spoke before all three of us headed inside.
“Hi there! I’ve been waiting for you people! Let me introduce myself again. My name is…”
But Cheren interrupted. “Professor Juniper? We know your name.”
“Come, come, Cheren! This is not a time to take things lightly. Today is a day to remember always, so it’s best to behave with some formality. That being so, once again, my name is Professor Juniper, and I am researching when and how creatures called Pokemon came into existence.” She stepped up to each of us before taking her normal spot. “Oh, that’s unusual! You’ve already has a Pokemon battle! So maybe that’s why… It feels as though your Pokemon have already begun to trust you! By the way, would you like to give your Pokemon a nickname?”
A nickname?? I stared down at my Poke ball. Hmmm…. What’s a nickname that would suit Oshawott the best?
Then it came to me. "Riki."
Professor Juniper looks over at me with a smile. "Riki is it's name. That is such a great name! As for why I gave all of you Pokemon..."
"It's for the Pokedex, right?" Cheren chimed in.
Bianca looked confused. “Pokedex?”
“I am astonished. Nice work, Cheren! You have already studied Pokemon extensively, haven’t you? Still, let me explain everything from the beginning, for everyone’s sake.” Taking a few steps back to her machines behind her., she began to explain. “The Pokedex is a high-tech device that automatically records the Pokemon you encounter! So, I want you three to visit many places and meet all of the Pokemon in the Unova region! This is my request.” She went silent for a few minutes letting us soak in the information she just gave us. “Alyla! Cheren! Bianca! You’ll go on an adventure to complete the Pokedex, will you not?”
I gave it a quick thought. Adventure with Pokemon while completing the Pokedex….
“Yes! I will complete the Pokedex!” I gave an answer.
Bianca smiled big. “Ok! I mean… Yes, professor!”
Cheren had look on his face that contained excitement. “Thank you so much. Because of you, I can become a Pokemon trainer, exactly as I’ve always wished.”
“All of you, thanks! You have given me the best possible answer!” Professor Juniper exclaimed. With that, she gave each of us the Pokedex. “Next, I need to teach you how to meet Pokemon. Please meet me at Route 1, ok?” Then she left the lab.
“S-since the professor asked us, it’s ok to go on an adventure, right? I can explore and maybe find out what I want to do in life. I think I’d like that.” Bianca sounded a little worried.
“Of course. We can travel however we want while we complete the Pokedex.” Cheren calmed her down. Wasting no time, I rushed out the lab and over to Route 1. Just as I was able to get five feet from the door, Bianca opened the door with Cheren right behind her.
“Come on! Alyla, wait up!”
“Oh, there you are! And…? What did the professor have to say?” My mom happened to be outside the lab waiting for us. So I explained everything to her just as the professor did. “She asked you to complete the Pokedex?! I can’t believe it! Well, actually, I can. I already knew she was going to ask.” She walked up to us and handed each of us a map. “That’s why I brought you three of these Town Maps. Take them with you!”
“I’ll take good care of it.” Cheren sounded grateful.
“Th-thank you so much!” Bianca sounded a little surprised.
“As for your room, Alyla—or what’s left of it… No need for any of you to worry. I’ll take care of tidying up. Ok, Alyla?” I nodded.
“Thanks, mom!”
“Ah, Pokemon. They are so cute, but they have enough power to destroy a bedroom! They are really something. With Pokemon like that at your side, you’ll be safe wherever you go! I’ll let your parents know! I hope that, in addition to Pokemon, you’ll find lots and lots of places you like in the Unova region—and become wonderful adults! Have a great trip!” Then she turned around and left to go back home.
“If I use the Town Map, I’ll always know where I am… That’s certainly helpful. Shall we head to Route 1? The professor’s waiting.” Cheren had turned to us.
Bianca nodded. “Let’s go, let’s go! Alyla, hurry and come too, ok?” Then they both left me in front of the lab as they headed on without me to Route 1.
